Solar Shingles on Your Roof

Although solar shingles were in development for decades, their introduction into homes is only the beginning. Tesla was the original inventor of this concept. GAF Energy (and CertainTeed) are also working with the same technology. There are companies that even make solar shingles that can adhere to your roof.

Tesla was the original company to produce solar shingles

Solar shingles is a relatively new product. Tesla, the first company to create solar shingles, introduced it in 2015. It blends seamlessly with your home's asphalt shingles. Other companies like Dow Chemical Company or BP Solar have tried to make solar shingles, but they have not achieved the same efficiency as residential rooftop solar panels.

Tesla's solar shingles are made up of both active and inactive shingles. This allows the homeowner the opportunity to get the solar benefits but not sacrifice their aesthetics. The solar shingles will cost homeowners more than traditional solar panel panels.

Cost

Solar shingles are priced according to how much power they produce. Depending on their efficiency, solar shingles can produce anywhere from 13 to 63 watts. Low-wattage solar shingles need more shingles and a larger roof area. There are two types if solar shingles: silicon solar and thin film solar. Thin film solarshingles are more affordable than other types. The efficiency of silicon solar shingles is similar to that of regular PV modules but they are much more expensive than thin film solar shingles.

Solar shingles prices vary greatly from one manufacturer to the next. Solar shingles typically cost between $20-25 per square foot. For a 2,000-square-foot roof, the cost of solar roof tiles is approximately $45,000

Efficiency

Solar shingles make use of solar energy to generate electricity. When sunlight hits solar shingles, electrons are drawn to holes in the roof that are positively or negatively charged. This creates DC current. The DC current is converted by an inverter to alternating power. This power can then be stored. This can be used in order to power your home and office.

Solar shingles can be made from a variety materials and designs. Although some use thin film technologies, most of the solar cells used are silicon-based. These shingles are much easier than conventional solar panels. They can also blend well with existing roof materials because they are flexible.

Lifespan

Solar shingles are a popular choice in many areas of the country for roof replacements. These shingles offer many advantages including the ability to last much longer than a typical roof. They contribute to the increase in property value. Some studies have found that solar roofs can add up to $15,000 in value to a home.

Solar shingles can last 30 years but their life expectancy varies. Every manufacturer offers a different warranty period for their material. Weather conditions affect the lifespan of solar shingles. The life expectancy of solar shingles can be affected by heavy snowfall and accumulations of debris.

Permits

The first step in installing solar shingles on your roof is to get the appropriate permits. There are several factors that determine which permit type you will need. In certain cases, the local Fire Department may require a special clearance to the solar panel. Others may require a Historical Commission permit.

Applying for a solar permit can take several hours. Third-party companies can help you with the paperwork. The average application is between 10 and 15 pages. After the application has been submitted, the utility company and AHJ will examine it and inform you if there are any problems. If your application is rejected, you can resubmit it. Permits can be issued in a matter of days or even a week.
